When you’re sweating through an intense workout, you probably reach for a sports drink to quench your thirst. Millions of hardcore athletes and casual fitness fans chug sports beverages to replenish the water, sodium and glucose the body needs to maximize muscle function and speed up post-workout recovery.

For most of us, however, sports drinks are more about convenience than necessity, says Boston dietitian Nancy Clark, author of “Nancy Clark’s Sports Nutrition Guidebook.”

“The average person is not working out hard enough to need the rapid refueling these drinks offer,” says Clark, who advises amateur and professional athletes.
Still, if plain old water isn’t appealing, it’s good to know which sports drink is right for you. While there are dozens of exercise drinks available, the ingredients in most of them are pretty similar – water, carbohydrates (sugar), sodium and potassium. Look at the pros and cons of some popular brands and new ones creating a buzz.

While much of the research on the effects of exercise on the mind has focused on countering dementia in seniors, recent studies show that kids and young to middle-aged adults can get a brain boost as well.

Overweight people may want to vacation in the mountains rather than at the beach — and not just to avoid putting on a swimsuit.

At least that’s the conclusion of a new German study, which found that a group of 20 obese men lost weight during a one-week stay at a high altitude — then kept it off for at least four weeks afterward.

During their stay on Germany’s highest mountain, the men didn’t up their physical activity and they weren’t put on a diet. Still, the men didn’t eat as much — reducing their calories by 734 calories to about 2,200 calories a day. Their diastolic blood pressure dipped while their metabolism climbed and they lost an average of 3.3 pounds each, according to the study, published Thursday in the journal Obesity.

People often don’t feel as hungry at higher elevations; in fact, lack of appetite and nausea are usually the first symptoms of altitude sickness.

What’s more surprising is that even after returning home to regular elevations, the guys kept the weight off, at least for the month they were tracked. That’s likely because they were able to exercise more thanks to the blood oxygen boost gained upon returning to level land.

Burnout is sneaky, it doesn’t happen overnight, but the stages have classic signs. Clueing in to them can help you sidestep a workout slump.

Stage 1: The honeymoon – Classic sign: You’re determined to slip into a size 6 by Valentine’s Day, so you never miss a workout. Burnout buster: Take a less-is-more approach. Burnout happens when you expect too much too soon.

Stage 2: Disenchantment – Classic sign: Your excitement fades when you don’t see results right away. You stop looking forward to gym time and start skipping workouts. Burnout buster: Set mini goals.

Stage 3: Stalling – Classic sign: Boredom and apathy override your commitment and motivation. You’ll use almost anything — work, family, stress, the weather — as an excuse to skip exercise. Burnout buster: Make a change. Use a different piece of cardio equipment or work out in a different part of the gym.

Stage 4: Frustration and surrender – Classic sign: Exercise slides from your list of top priorities. You want to throw in the towel (there’s always next year). Burnout buster: Make a schedule and stick to it for at least five weeks. A study in Health Psychology reports that it takes new exercisers that long to make their sessions a habit. Or make a date — with a trainer, your guy, or your best friend.

Rev up the treadmill: Sobering new research spells out just how much exercise women need to keep the flab off as they age — and it’s a lot.

At least an hour of moderate activity a day is needed for older women at a healthy weight who aren’t dieting. For those who are already overweight — and that’s most American women — even more exercise is called for to avoid gaining weight without eating less, the study results suggest.

Brisk walking, leisurely bicycling and golfing are all examples of moderate exercise. But don’t throw in the towel if you can’t do those things for at least an hour a day. Even a little exercise is good for your health even if it won’t make you thin, the researchers said.

Their findings are based on 34,079 non-dieting middle-aged women followed for about 13 years. The women gained an average of almost 6 pounds during the study.
